A Themed Anime Convention Experience

Location: Dumbo, New York

Overview:

AllKnight is an anime-themed convention that combines cosplay, performance, and interactive programming into a cohesive in-person experience.

The project focuses on translating fandom culture
into a structured, engaging, and scalable event format.

Problem:

• Large-scale conventions often feel fragmented, with too many parallel activities and no clear experience flow.
•Smaller events, tend to lack energy and engagement, offering limited interaction beyond passive participation.

As a result, audiences either feel overwhelmed or under-stimulated.

The challenge was to design a convention that is both engaging and structured ,with a clear path for interaction.

My Role:
Founder & Creative Director

• Led concept development and overall experience design

• Directed branding, visual identity, and promotional assets

• Designed event structure and programming flow

• Managed team coordination, vendors, and on-site execution

Approach:
Spatial Design

Space was organized to guide audience movement through different levels of engagement:
    •    Open areas for entry and casual exploration
    •    Transitional zones that encourage interaction
    •    Central areas for performances and high-energy moments

This structure allowed participants to move naturally through the event while maintaining a clear overall flow.
Interaction Design

A multi-layered interaction system was introduced to connect different parts of the event:
    •    NPC interactions to initiate engagement and guide participation
    •    Celebrity-style appearances to create focal moments and attract attention
    •    Live performances to anchor the experience and bring collective energy

These elements were designed to work together, forming a continuous flow rather than separate attractions.

Together, spatial layout and interaction design transformed the event into a cohesive experience with a clear participation path.

Outcome:

    •    150+ attendees at the initial event
    •    High participation across both scheduled and free-roaming activities
    •    Balanced engagement between stage programming and casual interaction
    •    Smooth audience flow across different zones and activities

The project demonstrates how structured programming and consistent branding can improve clarity and engagement in event experiences.

Further:

Following the initial event, AllKnight helped attract more creatives to the team, including performers, designers, and collaborators.

This expansion brought new ideas and formats into the project, opening up more possibilities for future programming and experiences.

The event evolved from a single production into a growing creative platform, with increasing capacity for experimentation and collaboration.
